Elafin, encoded by PI3, is an elastase-specific protease inhibitor with antimicrobial activity. It helps limit elastase-mediated tissue damage and is associated with epithelial and mucosal defence, particularly in barrier tissues where inflammatory stimuli can increase its expression.
