C5 (complement C5) is a complement-system precursor cleaved into C5a and C5b, coupling complement activation to inflammatory signalling and membrane attack complex assembly.
Biological function: C5 convertases cleave complement C5 to generate C5a and C5b. C5a is a potent anaphylatoxin and chemoattractant that drives inflammatory leukocyte responses, whereas C5b initiates assembly of the terminal complement complex with C6-C9, leading to membrane attack complex formation.
