APOA1 encodes apolipoprotein A1; the mature protein apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I) is the major protein component of plasma HDL and a central mediator of cholesterol efflux and reverse cholesterol transport.
Biological function: Apolipoprotein A-I promotes export of cellular cholesterol to HDL and transport toward the liver for excretion. ApoA-I also serves as a cofactor for lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), supporting plasma cholesteryl-ester formation and HDL maturation.
