AGO1 (argonaute RISC component 1; protein argonaute-1) is an Argonaute-family RNA-binding protein that uses small regulatory RNAs to guide gene silencing. It is studied as a core component of miRNA- and siRNA-associated post-transcriptional regulation.
Biological function: Protein argonaute-1 binds microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and uses their sequence information to recognize complementary RNA targets. AGO1 supports RNA interference and RNA silencing, including translational repression and degradation of miRNA-bound mRNA targets; NCBI also describes a role in transcriptional gene silencing of complementary promoter regions.
