ATG5 (autophagy related 5), also known as autophagy protein 5, is a core autophagy factor that forms a covalent conjugate with ATG12 and supports ATG8-family lipidation and autophagosome assembly.
Biological function: ATG5 is covalently conjugated to ATG12 through an autophagy-specific ubiquitin-like conjugation pathway. The ATG12-ATG5 complex, together with ATG16L1, provides ATG8-family ligase activity that promotes LC3/GABARAP lipidation on forming autophagosomal membranes and is required for efficient autophagosome assembly.
