Midkine (MDK) is a secreted heparin-binding cytokine and growth factor. It signals through cell-surface proteoglycan and non-proteoglycan receptors and is involved in processes including cell proliferation, survival, migration, adhesion, inflammation and tissue repair. Because MDK is secreted, its biology is primarily extracellular and receptor-mediated rather than confined to a single intracellular compartment.
