PER2 is a core component of the mammalian circadian clock. Its abundance and activity oscillate over the daily cycle, and PER2 participates in transcriptional feedback that helps set circadian timing in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and peripheral tissues. The protein undergoes regulated movement between the cytoplasm and nucleus as part of this clock machinery.
