HSPG2 encodes perlecan, a large heparan sulphate proteoglycan that is an integral component of basement membranes and vascular extracellular matrix. It contributes to basement-membrane structure, endothelial barrier function, cell attachment and growth-factor signalling, and is extracellular rather than a cytosolic target.
