CYP2E1 is a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase involved in the oxidative metabolism of ethanol and a range of small xenobiotic substrates. It is an integral membrane enzyme of the endoplasmic reticulum, with additional mitochondrial localisation reported, and its catalytic activity can generate reactive metabolites and reactive oxygen species.
