AIM2 is absent in melanoma 2, also known as interferon-inducible protein AIM2. It is a cytosolic double-stranded DNA sensor and core component of the AIM2 inflammasome, linking detection of misplaced DNA to innate inflammatory responses.
Biological function: AIM2 binds cytosolic double-stranded DNA through its HIN domain and assembles an inflammasome with the adaptor ASC, enabling caspase-1 activation. This promotes maturation of inflammatory cytokines and gasdermin-dependent pyroptotic cell death as part of innate defence against cytosolic DNA.
