Carbonic anhydrase 4 (CA4; carbonic anhydrase IV/CA-IV) is a GPI-anchored membrane zinc metalloenzyme with an extracellular catalytic domain. It catalyses reversible CO2 hydration and is studied in extracellular pH regulation, bicarbonate transport, renal physiology and retinal acid handling.
Biological function: CA4 catalyses reversible conversion of carbon dioxide and water to bicarbonate and protons at the cell surface, helping couple extracellular carbon chemistry to pH homeostasis. Reviewed UniProt also supports roles in bicarbonate-transporter activity and retinal acid removal.
