BCL2 like 1 (BCL2L1) encodes Bcl-2-like protein 1, whose major splice isoforms include anti-apoptotic Bcl-xL and pro-apoptotic Bcl-xS. This BCL-2-family regulator is central to mitochondrial apoptosis and cell-survival research.
Biological function: BCL2L1 produces Bcl-2-like protein 1 isoforms with opposing effects on apoptosis. Bcl-xL inhibits cell death by limiting mitochondrial cytochrome-c release and caspase activation, whereas Bcl-xS promotes apoptosis.
