Basic helix-loop-helix ARNT like 1 (BMAL1; ARNTL) is a core bHLH-PAS circadian transcription factor. BMAL1 heterodimerizes with CLOCK or NPAS2 to drive E-box-dependent transcription that helps generate daily rhythms in gene expression, metabolism and physiology.

Biological function: BMAL1 forms transcriptionally active heterodimers with CLOCK or NPAS2 and binds E-box regulatory elements in circadian target genes. Its activity drives molecular-clock transcriptional programs and supports feedback loops that generate approximately 24-hour rhythms in gene expression.
