Beta-secretase 1 (BACE1), also known as BACE, is a membrane aspartyl protease best known for initiating beta-site processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP). This target page groups ABMIUM catalogue reagents for studying APP proteolysis, amyloid-beta pathway biology and BACE1-dependent neuronal protein processing.
Biological function: BACE1 is a type I transmembrane aspartyl protease. It cleaves APP at the beta-secretase site, generating the C99 fragment that can be further processed by gamma-secretase to produce amyloid-beta peptides. BACE1 activity is favoured in acidic intracellular compartments such as endosomes, and the enzyme also processes additional neuronal membrane proteins.
