BMPR1A (bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 1A; ALK3/ALK-3, BMPR-1A and CD292) is a type I transmembrane serine/threonine kinase receptor in bone morphogenetic protein signalling. BMPR1A is a receptor serine/threonine kinase for BMP-family ligands including BMP2, BMP4, GDF5 and GDF6. After ligand binding, type II receptors phosphorylate and activate BMPR1A; the activated type I receptor then engages and activates SMAD transcriptional regulators. This receptor architecture links extracellular BMP cues to transcriptional programmes controlling processes such as differentiation and tissue patterning.
