Biological function

Proteolytic processing of AMBP produces two functionally distinct proteins. Alpha-1-microglobulin binds and scavenges heme and reactive radicals and contributes to protection from oxidative tissue damage. Bikunin inhibits several serine proteases and contributes to inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor family complexes in extracellular protease regulation.
