IL2RA encodes the alpha subunit of the interleukin-2 receptor, also known as CD25. IL2RA binds IL-2 and contributes to formation of the high-affinity IL-2 receptor complex with IL2RB and the common gamma-chain, supporting IL-2-dependent immune signalling and helping regulate regulatory T-cell activity and immune tolerance.

IL2RA/CD25 is widely studied in T-cell activation, regulatory T-cell biology, immune tolerance, cytokine signalling, autoimmunity, transplantation and immuno-oncology. Expression can vary strongly with activation state and cell population, so experimental interpretation should distinguish constitutive regulatory T-cell expression from activation-associated CD25 expression in other lymphocytes.
