BCHE is a serine hydrolase that hydrolyses choline esters and other ester-containing substrates. Compared with acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase has broader substrate specificity and contributes substantially to plasma cholinesterase activity and metabolism of multiple ester substrates.
