Biological function

BACE1 is a type I transmembrane aspartyl protease. It cleaves APP at the beta-secretase site, generating the C99 fragment that can be further processed by gamma-secretase to produce amyloid-beta peptides. BACE1 activity is favoured in acidic intracellular compartments such as endosomes, and the enzyme also processes additional neuronal membrane proteins.
