HMGB1 is a multifunctional, redox-sensitive chromatin-associated protein. In the nucleus it acts as a DNA chaperone in transcription, replication, chromatin remodelling and DNA repair; extracellular or cytoplasmic HMGB1 can also participate in inflammatory and innate immune signalling.
