Biological function

ACO1 is a bifunctional cytosolic protein. When assembled with a [4Fe-4S] cluster it acts as aconitase, catalysing the reversible interconversion of citrate and isocitrate through cis-aconitate. Under iron-limiting conditions, loss of the cluster enables ACO1/IRP1 to bind iron-responsive elements in target mRNAs and regulate proteins involved in cellular iron uptake, storage and use.
