Biological function

The ALPL protein is the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase isozyme. It hydrolyses phosphate-containing substrates, including inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) and pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. By reducing extracellular PPi, a mineralization inhibitor, ALPL supports hydroxyapatite formation and normal bone and tooth mineralization.

ALPL is studied in osteoblast differentiation, biomineralization, phosphate metabolism and alkaline-phosphatase activity assays. TNAP/TNSALP terminology is also widely used in research on tissue-nonspecific alkaline-phosphatase biology.
