Stimulator of Interferon Gene (Sting, TMEM173) gehört zur TMEM173-Familie. STING ist 379 Aminosäuren (aa) lang. Es enthält eine N-terminale zytoplasmatische Region (aa 1-20), vier Transmembransegmente (aa 21-173) und eine C-terminale zytoplasmatische Domäne (aa 174-379). Es wird ubiquitär in endothelialen Zellen der Haut, alveolären Typ-2-Pneumozyten, Bronchialepithel und alveolären Makrophagen exprimiert. Seine Untereinheitenstruktur ist mit dem MHC-II-Komplex assoziiert und interagiert mit DDX58/RIG-I, MAVS und SSR2, RNF5 und TRIM56 zusammen mit TBK1. Dieser Proteintyp wird oft als Vermittler der angeborenen Immunantwort verwendet, der als Sensor für zytosolische DNA von Bakterien und Viren fungiert und die Produktion von Typ-I-Interferon fördert.
