Fumarase (FH) ist ein Enzym, das die reversible Hydratation/Dehydratation von Fumarat zu Malat katalysiert. Fumarase existiert in zwei Formen: mitochondrial und zytosolisch. Das mitochondriale Isoenzym ist am Krebs-Zyklus (auch bekannt als Tricarbonsäurezyklus [TCA] oder Citratzyklus) beteiligt, und das zytosolische Isoenzym ist am Stoffwechsel von Aminosäuren und Fumarat beteiligt. Die subzelluläre Lokalisation wird durch das Vorhandensein einer Signalsequenz am Amino-Terminus in der mitochondrialen Form bestimmt, während die subzelluläre Lokalisation in der zytosolischen Form durch das Fehlen der in der mitochondrialen Variante gefundenen Signalsequenz bestimmt wird.
