Histon H3 ist eines der fünf wichtigsten Histonproteine, die an der Struktur des Chromatins in eukaryotischen Zellen beteiligt sind. Es ist ein Kernbestandteil des Nukleosoms. Nukleosomen wickeln und verdichten die DNA zu Chromatin, wodurch die Zugänglichkeit der DNA für die zellulären Mechanismen, die DNA als Vorlage benötigen, eingeschränkt wird. Histone spielen daher eine zentrale Rolle bei der Transkriptionsregulation, der DNA-Reparatur, der DNA-Replikation und der Chromosomenstabilität.
