XIAP, auch bekannt als IAP3 oder BIRC4, ist ein Protein, das den apoptotischen Zelltod stoppt. Es ist auf Chromosom Xq25 kartiert. Dieses Gen kodiert ein Protein, das zu einer Familie von apoptotischen Suppressorproteinen gehört. Mitglieder dieser Familie teilen ein konserviertes Motiv, das als Baculovirus IAP Repeat bezeichnet wird und für ihre anti-apoptotische Funktion notwendig ist. Dieses Protein funktioniert, indem es an Tumornekrosefaktor-Rezeptor-assoziierte Faktoren TRAF1 und TRAF2 bindet und die Apoptose hemmt, die durch Menadion, einen potenten Induktor freier Radikale, und Interleukin-1-beta-konvertierendes Enzym induziert wird. Dieses Protein hemmt auch mindestens zwei Mitglieder der Caspase-Familie von Zelltodproteasen, Caspase-3 und Caspase-7. Mutationen in diesem Gen sind die Ursache des X-chromosomalen lymphoproliferativen Syndroms. Alternatives Spleißen führt zu mehreren Transkriptvarianten.
