Small ubiquitin-related modifier 1 (SUMO1), auch SMT3C oder PIC1 genannt, ist ein Protein, das beim Menschen durch das SUMO1-Gen kodiert wird. Dieses Gen ist auf 2q33.1 kartiert. Dieses Gen kodiert ein Protein, das Mitglied der SUMO-Proteinfamilie (small ubiquitin-like modifier) ist. Es fungiert ähnlich wie Ubiquitin, indem es als Teil eines posttranslationalen Modifikationssystems an Zielproteine gebunden wird. Im Gegensatz zu Ubiquitin, das Proteine zum Abbau markiert, ist dieses Protein jedoch an einer Vielzahl zellulärer Prozesse beteiligt, wie dem nukleären Transport, der Transkriptionsregulation, der Apoptose und der Proteinstabilität. Es ist erst aktiv, nachdem die letzten vier Aminosäuren des Carboxy-Terminus abgespalten wurden. Für dieses Gen wurden mehrere Pseudogene berichtet.
