The gene is one of several related genes in a region of chromosome 3p21.3 associated with tumor suppression. This gene encodes a lysosomal hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidases intracellularly degrade hyaluronan, one of the major glycosaminoglycans of the extracellular matrix.
