ATG4A is a peptidase family C54 cysteine protease involved in the proteolytic processing of ATG8-family proteins. ATG4-family enzymes expose the C-terminal glycine needed for ATG8 lipidation and can reverse lipidation, helping regulate autophagosome membrane dynamics and autophagic flux.
