This gene encodes a member of the family of pyridine nucleotide oxidoreductases. This protein reduces thioredoxins as well as other substrates, and plays a role in selenium metabolism and protection against oxidative stress. The functional enzyme is thought to be a homodimer which uses FAD as a cofactor. Each subunit contains a selenocysteine (Sec) residue which is required for catalytic activity. The selenocysteine is encoded by the UGA codon that normally signals translation termination. The 3' UTR of selenocysteine-containing genes have a common stem-loop structure, the sec insertion sequence (SECIS), that is necessary for the recognition of UGA as a Sec codon rather than as a stop signal. Alternative splicing results in several transcript variants encoding the same or different isoforms.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"BT LAB","offers":[{"title":"48T","offer_id":57661650501972,"sku":"ABM212450","price":205.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"96T","offer_id":57661650534740,"sku":"ABM212451","price":293.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1040\/1782\/2036\/files\/btlab-b3a59478612f8578866cceb5599f608a1578c4527cb5c7356cc403f49b1504d3.jpg?v=1792159234","url":"https:\/\/www.abmium.com\/de\/products\/abm212450","provider":"ABMIUM","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
