BMPR1A

bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 1A

BMPR1A (bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 1A; ALK3/ALK-3, BMPR-1A and CD292) is a type I transmembrane serine/threonine kinase receptor in bone morphogenetic protein signalling. It forms ligand-induced complexes with type II BMP receptors to transmit TGF-beta-superfamily signals through SMAD transcriptional regulators.

Biological function

BMPR1A is a receptor serine/threonine kinase for BMP-family ligands including BMP2, BMP4, GDF5 and GDF6. After ligand binding, type II receptors phosphorylate and activate BMPR1A; the activated type I receptor then engages and activates SMAD transcriptional regulators. This receptor architecture links extracellular BMP cues to transcriptional programmes controlling processes such as differentiation and tissue patterning.

Research context

BMPR1A is studied in BMP receptor signalling, developmental biology, chondrocyte differentiation and broader tissue-patterning and differentiation models. Research commonly examines ligand-receptor selectivity, type I/type II receptor complex assembly and downstream SMAD responses.
