BCL6 is a transcriptional repressor required for germinal-centre formation and antibody affinity maturation. It forms complexes with corepressors and histone deacetylases to repress distinct target-gene programmes, helping germinal-centre B cells proliferate while tolerating physiological DNA breaks associated with class-switch recombination and somatic hypermutation. BCL6 also contributes to follicular helper T-cell differentiation and immunological memory.
