Biological function

Alpha-methylacyl-CoA racemase converts (2R)-2-methylacyl-CoA esters to the (2S) configuration required for downstream beta-oxidation. Human AMACR acts on substrates derived from branched-chain fatty acids such as pristanic acid and on bile-acid synthesis intermediates, linking peroxisomal and mitochondrial lipid metabolism.
