ALOX5 catalyses conversion of arachidonic acid to 5-hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HPETE) and then leukotriene A4 (LTA4), a branch-point intermediate for downstream leukotrienes. This places 5-LOX at a central enzymatic step in leukotriene generation.
