AIFM1 functions as a mitochondrial NADH oxidoreductase and contributes to mitochondrial physiology. Following defined cell-death stimuli, apoptosis-inducing factor 1 can be released from the mitochondrial intermembrane space and translocate toward the nucleus, where it contributes to caspase-independent chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation.
AIFM1 is studied in mitochondrial biology, redox regulation and mechanisms of caspase-independent cell death, including parthanatos-related models. Its mitochondrial housekeeping functions should be distinguished from stress-induced redistribution during cell-death experiments.
